IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON THE WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM
We have been communicating weekly with regard to the coming changes in the handicap system, as administered by the USGA. Based on current information here are some important points for you to know as we move into 2020.

• Your last GHIN update will take place on 12-15-2019.

• You should continue posting all eligible scores through 12-31-2019. -For play between 1-1 and 1-6 we recommend using your (12-15/12-31trend?) handicap.

• The GHIN system will go dark from 12-31-2019 until 1-6 2020 to allow for the necessary software updates. We will make arrangements to manually keep scores during this period and record those scores once GHIN is live again.

• In 2020 handicaps will be adjusted every time you post a score, making it very important that you post every eligible score the day that you play.

• As communicated previously our recording of posting scores needs improvement. Both Women and Men have the majority of their players currently posting scores for less than 75% of their rounds.

• One of the 12-7 Men’s Day winners has posted only 23% of their rounds.

• In an effort to ensure equitable competitions we had previously communicated our intent to limit eligibility to win prizes to those members who have posted at least 75% of their scores, effective 1-1-2020.

• In light of everything going on with changes to the handicap system, we are delaying implementation of this policy until March 1. We will be reporting the posting percentages of winning members during January and February and working with anyone who is below 75% to understand why they are not posting their scores

• Some members have been using the USGA GHIN app to post scores. That app will not work after 12-31-2019, a new USGA GHIN mobile app is scheduled to be available for downloading on 1-6-2020.

Obviously there is a lot going on with handicaps and you can anticipate future updates. Please contact members of our golf professional staff or members of the handicap committee should you have questions.

Happy New Year, Fairways and Greens!

Last week we received 2.8 inches of rain. The pine straw area between 2 and 3 is flooded again. We had standing water in bunkers – see photos.

The rain came fast and furious on Wednesday. To our surprise it eroded the front right greens bunker lip on hole 9 – see photos.

Low temperatures were much higher than normal last week. The rain and warmer temperatures have resurrected the mosquitoes and no-see-ums. Please be aware insect repellent is detrimental to turf – see photo.

On Wednesday December 18th, we will pencil tine aerate greens. We continue trimming the mangroves left of the driving range and trimming the sabal palms throughout the golf course.

The greens are stimping 10.75

Please remember to repair ball marks, fill divots, and abide by the green and red traffic poles.

Enjoy your golf course.

Thank you,

Limpkin
bow12-19.jpgNamed for its odd limping gait, Limpkins are often confused with juvenile white ibises (which are also brown in color). But the bold white streaking on the head and neck and the distinctive white spots on the chocolate-colored body clearly distinguish the Limpkin from other species. Because these birds are largely nocturnal we tend not to see many around, but they can sometimes be observed early in the morning or late afternoon along the edges of our more marshy ponds. Walter Degnan came upon the Limpkin pictured above on the sidewalk near his home in Marina Cove.Usually we see them standing in about six inches of water looking for their favorite foods--freshwater snails and mussels. Limpkins also feast on crustaceans, frogs and insects. The next time you hear a wailing "ker-r-ee-oww, ker-r-ee-oww, ker-r-ee-oww, k-eow, k-eow" during the night time hours while out on your lanai, you just might be hearing a Limpkin. Many people say that they sound surprisingly like humans wailing or howling--giving rise to such local names as "crazed banshees" or "crying birds."
